off topic: Latest rock Supergroup - "Them Crooked Vultures"

John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl, Josh Homme? These are the members of the latest rock “Supergroup” called “Them Crooked Vultures”. Anyone who recognizes these names would have no hesitation in picking up their self titled debut album that came out late last year.  I have just run the disc once and I am disappointed to say the least. Maybe it would grow on me with more spins.

I am not a huge Josh Homme fan barring selected QOSA material and my disappointment with the album is purely that Josh gets to write and sing all the material. Wonder what it would have been with Dave on the vocals? For QOSA fans this could be right up there with ‘Deaf..” and that’s precisely where the album fails for me. A lot of guitar work by Josh sounds too similar to what we have all heard before and it’s hard to comprehend either his vocals or his lyrics. The overall sound is more QOSA than either Nirvana or Zeppelin - an opportunity lost in my opinion.

There surely are some brilliant moments on this record too - especially on the song ‘Scumbag blues’ which by far is the best on the album. Some reminiscence of Zeppelin surely makes this my pick of the album. Jones is superb both on the bass and keyboard (which he rarely gets to play on the record) and so is Dave with Bonham like feel to his sound and rhythm. For a change, Josh with his falsetto sounds better than on any other track. To his credit however, his guitar playing is superb all through even though sometimes there are way too many riffs being overlapped for my liking. Maybe it’s just me with too much swamp rock in my veins these days.

I would have seriously fancied this album 10 years ago and it could still be good for many spins today but it would never make it to the top of my evening playlist barring a few selected tracks. Apart from ‘Scumbag blues’, I liked ‘Bandoliers’ simply because Josh Homme shows some vitality in his vocals along with a crisp riff which is not over the top as on most of the tracks. Listen to it purely for Dave’s brilliant drumming interleaved with Jones’s keyboard. ‘Elephants’ is one track that promises a great deal but fails to deliver in totality- still a very good number for headbanging- especially the initial salvo is huge on this track.

Overall, this is a decent rock record which would have been lost in oblivion if it had a different line up with no rock lineage. This is no Zeppelin or Nirvana record so keep your expectations in check and you could be pleasantly surprised.

Kings 11 is not for sale...

CNN-IBN had reported that Hero Honda had bought Kings Punjab earlier today however the report has been denied by both Kings Punjab and Hero Honda.

Punjab was purchased by bollywood actress Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia, Mohit Burman and Karan Paul for $76 million in 2008. Burman told television channel Headlines Today that there were no plans to sell in the near future.

Hero Honda, the world's second-larget manufacturer of two-wheelers, also issued a statement denying the reports. "The current media reports about Hero Honda buying stake in Kings XI Punjab is completely baseless and untrue. We have not had any discussion in this regard either," they said. "Hero Honda's association with IPL as an associate sponsor and the main team sponsor of Delhi Daredevils remains unchanged."

Ferdinand could repalce Terry as England captain

Capello has given strong indication that Ferdinand could lead England for the World Cup in South Africa.

"When I chose Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain and also named a third choice," said Capello. "There is no reason to change this decision. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the FA, particularly Lord David Triesman and Ian Watmore for allowing me to make this decision in my own time and in the best interest of the team."

John Terry sacked as England Captain

John Terry would not hold the trophy aloft this summer in South Africa even if England is able to do the unthinkable. Fabio Capello, the England manager, today made his decision of stripping Terry of his captaincy.

Capello said: "After much thought I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry. As a captain with the team, Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour," said Capello. "However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad. What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice and Terry was notified first."

Sergio Canales could be the next big thing...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/
Sergio Canales, the Racing Santander sensation, is all set for the big league. He has been the talk of the town lately and is being currently linked to top clubs including Real Madrid and Chelsea.. At 18, he is even being considered for a World Cup birth by the national coach Vicente Del Bosque which is saying a lot about this lad considering the firepower that Spain have in Torres and Villa.

Watch some glimpses of this 'special' one from Spain:

Chelsea leaves the door wide open for United. Draw with Hull.

It got better for United last night as league leaders Chelsea were held to a draw by Hull City. This comes on the back of a super United win at the Emirates and it leaves just a two point gap at the top of the table. The weekend clash between Chelsea and Arsenal will now be even more intriguing.

If Arsenal is able to get even a point off Chelsea, United would be mighty pleased. This years title could come down to the game between United and Chelsea and what a match that would be.

Afridi caught cheating ... again ...

Yesterday was a day of exceptional sporting action - both individual and team - but it was also witness to one of the most unsporting of acts. While Federer rose above one and all in tennis greatness with his 16th Slam title, United were superb in their demolition of Arsenal in the biggest games of their season thus far.

While some great sport was happening around the world, one man was hell bent on grabbing the headlines for all the wrong reasons... Shahid Afridi, captain of Pakistan cricket team was caught cheating... he was trying to tamper the cricket ball....

what a cheat .. check the videos

what a fool.. with hundreds of cameras around he decides to eat the ball. he has been caught enough times to deserve a much bigger punishment. Whats it with a 2 match ban.. quite ridiculous since he was also the captain of his team ....

he was equally foolish a few years back ... this time its the pitch.
